Kookaburra marry me, gay your love must be

At school, I learned the Kookaburra song. We sang it so many times as a canon that I still remember the text.

I always sang the song like this:

Kookaburra sits in the old gum tree
Marry, marry me king of the bush is he
Laugh kookaburra, laugh
Kookaburra gay your love must be
Why I would ask the Kookaburra to “marry me” and why his love was gay was not in question.
